FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Permanent Makeup (PMU) Frequently Asked Questions

What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup (PMU), also called cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation, is a procedure where pigment is implanted into the skin to enhance features such as eyebrows, eyeliner and lips.

Is permanent makeup really permanent?

PMU is considered permanent because pigment is implanted into the dermis of the skin. However, it gradually fades over time and usually requires maintenance or color refresh appointments every 1–3 years depending on skin type, lifestyle, and procedure that was done.

Do I need a consultation before my Permanent Makeup appointment?

A consultation is recommended for all new clients and may be required for certain services. During the consultation, we'll review your goals, medical history, skin type, and any previous permanent makeup to determine the best treatment plan for you. Every client gets a consult prior to their service whether that is done before your scheduled appointment or a separate appointment is up to you.

But let's help navigate that for you...

Clients with previous PMU, color correction needs, or medical concerns may require a separate consultation before booking a procedure.

Photos Required: If you have existing permanent makeup, please send clear, makeup-free photos before scheduling so we can determine whether you are a candidate for a touch-up, color correction, or removal.

This approach helps prevent booking issues and sets clear expectations from the start.

Yes, many permanent makeup artists recommend or require a consultation before the procedure, but whether it's mandatory varies by provider and service.

A Consultation Is Important If:

  • The client has never had PMU before.

  • The client has previous tattooed brows, eyeliner, or lip blush from another artist.

  • The client has medical conditions, allergies, or is taking medications that could affect healing.

  • Color correction may be needed.

  • The client is unsure and would like to meet me prior.

  • The client has unrealistic expectations or wants significant changes to their natural features.

Benefits of a PMU Consultation

  • Evaluate skin type and suitability.

  • Review medical history and contraindications.

  • Discuss desired results and expectations.

  • Recommend the most appropriate technique.

  • Explain healing, aftercare, and maintenance.

  • Review pricing and policies.

  • Answer client questions.

  • Determine whether previous PMU can be worked over or requires removal.

When a Separate Consultation May Not Be Necessary

Some artists conduct the consultation at the beginning of the appointment if:

  • The client is a good candidate.

  • The procedure is straightforward.

  • The client has submitted photos and has talked with me about their expectations.

  • I have already reviewed the client's goals electronically

I happily offer:

  • Free virtual consultations via photos and messaging.

  • Phone consultations.

  • In-person consultations for more complex cases.

How long does permanent makeup last?

Results vary by individuals, but most procedures last around:

  • Brows: 1–3 years

  • Lip Blush: 2–5 years

  • Eyeliner: 3–5 years

Factors affecting longevity include:

  • Skin type

  • Sun exposure

  • Skincare products you use

  • Medical conditions

  • Smoking

  • Immune system activity

Does permanent makeup hurt?

Most clients experience very little to no discomfort. Topical anesthetics/ numbing is used before and during the procedure to maximize comfort. I use a topical Lidocaine cream and a numbing gel during the procedure for comfort.

How long does the appointment take?

Typically:

  • Consultation: 15–30 minutes

  • Initial procedure: 2–3 hours

  • Touch-up appointment: 1–2 hours

  • Every client is different and I never rush our time together.

What is included in the price?

Pricing generally includes:

  • Consultation

  • Initial procedure

  • One perfecting session (usually 6–8 weeks later, typically just for brows)

  • Aftercare instructions

  • Aftercare products such as soap, lotion or Aquaphor.

Why is a touch-up appointment necessary?

The skin heals differently for every person. A touch-up allows adjustments such as:

  • Color

  • Shape

  • Density

  • Retention

What if I don't return for my touch-up?

Your results may heal unevenly, lighter than intended, or incomplete. I highly recommend coming in just to make sure you healed correctly. Touchups are ONLY complimentary within the 6-8 week time frame after your initial appointment. Failure to book on top will result in late fees.

Can permanent makeup be removed?

Yes. Removal options include:

  • Saline removal

  • Laser removal

  • Color correction procedures

Can I choose my shape and color?

Absolutely. A thorough consultation and mapping process is completed before any pigment is implanted. You will agree on color, shape and size with me before hand. We both will sign a waver and concentrate form agreeing on what was discussed.

What eyebrow techniques do you offer?

Common techniques include:

  • Powder Brows

  • Ombre Brows

  • Nano Brows

  • Combination Brows

I have found over the years there are many names that people use to describe their style of brows. No matter what style you are looking for I am fully capable of doing that style. A consult ( this can be done the same day as well) before your procedure helps us both curate the procedure that is correct for you.

Which brow technique is best for me?

This depends on:

  • Skin type

  • Existing brow hair

  • Lifestyle

  • Desired look

Can PMU cover sparse or missing brows?

Yes. PMU can create the appearance of fuller, more defined brows.

Will my brows look natural?

The goal is always to create the most natural and flattering brows for you. When properly designed and healed, brows should complement your facial features and appear natural.

Why do brows look darker immediately after treatment?

Fresh pigment can appear 30–50% darker during the first week of healing. This is due to the pigment sitting on top of the skin. The first week that pigment or ink has to settle into the dermis. This can leave your brows looking darker. ridged and stark initially. I say this all the time, trust the process.

Will my brows turn blue, red, or gray?

Modern pigments and proper technique greatly reduce this risk. Periodic color refreshes help maintain the desired tone so you don't have drastic shifts in color. Different pigments have different bases to them and our goal is to choose the correct one for you.

What is lip blush?

Lip blush is a cosmetic tattoo that enhances the color, shape, and definition of the lips.

Can lip blush make my lips look bigger?

Lip blush creates the illusion of fuller lips through improved definition but does not physically increase lip size. I will never tattoo over your vermillion border. the lip tissue is different and it will never heal evenly if you're trying to get "bigger lips" with color alone. This is why I suggest seeing an injector to adjust size that way. Lip Blushing pairs beautifully with filler.

How long does lip blush last?

Typically 2–5 years with proper care.

Can lip blush cover dark lips?

In many cases, yes. Some clients may require color neutralization sessions before achieving their desired color.

Will I be swollen afterward?

Mild swelling is normal and typically subsides within 24–72 hours. Bruising is normal and can leave certain areas looking a little more swollen. This is completely normal.

Can I wear lipstick after healing?

Yes. Most clients can continue using lipstick and gloss after healing is complete. Give your skin 7-10 days of healing before putting anything other than healing ointment on them. Makeup and Makeup brushes harbor a lot of bacteria and we don't want you getting an infection.

What if I am prone to Cold Sores?

Make sure you check in with your PCP or Dermatologist to pre medicate 3 days to a week prior to treatment so you don't get an uncomfortable outbreak. pre medicating helps decrease the likelihood of a cold sore outbreak.

What If I want lip liner? What if I want a more full coverage lip tattoo?

I will gladly do whatever style you wish. This is the beauty of art and creativity. We can go as soft or as full coverage as you'd like. This will always boil down to preference.

Can I wear contact lenses?

Yes, but contacts should be removed during the procedure and avoided for the recommended healing period.

AFTERCARE FAQ

What is the healing process like?

Days 1–3

  • Color appears dark, ridged and stark

  • Mild tenderness

  • Possible swelling

Days 4–10

  • Flaking and peeling begins ( typically looks like very light dandruff)

  • Color appears lighter, this is called the "Ghosting Phase"

Days 10–30

  • Pigment settles into the proper area of the skin

  • Color gradually starts to return

Touchup 6–8 Weeks

  • Final healed results are visible

Is peeling normal?

Yes. Peeling and flaking are expected parts of healing. Some clients will peel or flake more than others. In health individuals that follow after care instructions, the healing process is very simple.

Can I pick or scratch the area?

No. Picking can cause:

  • Pigment loss

  • Scarring

  • Uneven healing

When can I wear makeup again?

Only after the treated area has completely healed. 7-10 days is typical. You never want to put anything dirty on open skin. If you rush putting makeup on a new tattoo you risk giving yourself an infection and uneven healing.

When can I exercise?

Avoid excessive sweating for approximately 7–10 days or as instructed. Why? Because working out creates sweat and sweat will push out the pigment that is trying to heal into the skin.

Can I swim after PMU?

Absolutely NOT! Avoid:

  • Pools

  • Oceans

  • Hot tubs

  • Saunas

Until fully healed. 7-10 days is typical. Some Clients need more healing time due to lifestyle or health factors. This is an investment we want to heal perfectly so you can enjoy your service for years to come.

AFTERCARE DO'S

✔ Follow aftercare instructions exactly how they are given

✔ Keep the treated area clean

✔ Use recommended aftercare products

✔ Stay away from strong acids, facials, and retinols for at least a week before & after your service.

✔ Sleep on a clean pillowcase

✔ Protect healed PMU from sun exposure by using the appropriate sunscreen. ( Mineral is best)

✔ Attend your touch-up appointment on time. Lack of doing so may yield additional fees.

✔ Contact your artist if you have concerns.

✔ You cannot offend me and I want you to love your new work. don't ever hesitate to reach out, no questions is a dumb one.

AFTERCARE DON'TS

✘ Pick, peel, or scratch

✘ Use harsh skincare products ( If your not sure, reach out or share your skin routine so I can help)

✘ Apply makeup to healing skin

✘ Never soak the treated area, no pools, saunas, long hot showers

✘ Expose healing skin to direct sunlight

✘ Use exfoliants or retinol on treated areas

✘ Schedule facials, chemical peels, or laser treatments during healing

RESULTS & MAINTENANCE

When should I schedule a color refresh or touchup?

Most clients benefit from a refresh every 12–36 months, However never rush this. I want color fading down 50% before you come in for a "Color Boost" too much color too soon can leave brows looking more like a tattoo than a natural enhancement.

Why do some clients retain pigment better than others?

Retention is affected by:

  • Skin type

  • Age

  • Lifestyle

  • Health conditions

  • Sun exposure

  • Skincare routines

Can I change the color later?

Minor color adjustments can often be made during maintenance appointments. Drastic changes may require remove or lightening before we are able to make big changes. I typically shy away from "Trends" my goal is to always do what is ethical and best for each client.

What happens if I stop getting touch-ups?

Pigment will gradually fade over time but usually does not disappear completely.

WHO IS NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE?

You may need medical clearance or may not be a candidate if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding ( I will not work on you)

  • Have active skin infections

  • Have uncontrolled diabetes

  • Are undergoing chemotherapy

  • Have certain autoimmune disorders

  • Have recent facial surgery

  • Are taking blood-thinning medications

  • Have keloid scarring tendencies

  • Have active eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis in the treatment area

  • If you are taking acutane

Always discuss your medical history during consultation.
